Holy Icks | Week 2

Small Group Discussion

Opening Question:

Share a time when you did something good or helpful, but nobody noticed or thanked you. How did that make you feel?

Discussion Questions:

  1. What stood out to you most from this message? Why?
  2. Read Matthew 23:5-7 together. How did the Pharisees demonstrate their need to be seen? What are modern equivalents of “phylacteries” and “tassels” today?
  3. What does “external locus of control” mean? Can you identify areas in your life where you’ve given others control over your sense of worth or identity?
  4. Social Media Reality Check: How does social media feed our need to be seen and validated? Be honest – how do you feel when a post doesn’t get the engagement you expected?
  5. The pastor mentioned that “being noticed by others and being known by God are not the same thing.” What’s the difference? Which one do you prioritize in your daily life?
  6. Think about your service at church, work, or home. Have you ever stopped doing something good because no one noticed or appreciated it? What does that reveal about your motivation?
  7. Read Matthew 6:1-6 (giving, praying, fasting in secret). Why does Jesus emphasize doing these things in secret? What reward is He promising?
  8. The message said, “Humility is staying small in your own eyes.” What does this look like practically? How is this different from low self-esteem?
  9. Biblical Examples: The sermon mentioned Noah (120 years, only family saved), Jeremiah (no converts), and Mary (faced shame). How do their stories challenge our need for visible results and applause?

Key Takeaways: Three Signs of a “Depends Faith”

  1. Value depends on visibility: Believing only visible things are valuable
  2. Calling depends on clapping: Needing constant affirmation to continue
  3. Serving depends on showing: Only serving when others can see

Practical Applications:

This Week’s Challenge: The Secret Service Challenge

Choose ONE of the following to do this week WITHOUT telling anyone (except your accountability partner if needed):

  1. At Home: Do a chore that’s not yours without announcing it
  2. At Work: Help a colleague or do something extra without seeking credit
  3. In Your Community: Pay for someone’s coffee/meal anonymously
  4. At Church: Serve in a behind-the-scenes role (nursery, parking, setup/teardown)
  5. Financial: Give to someone in need or a ministry without anyone knowing
  6. The Goal: Experience the joy of serving with only God as your audience.

A short bio goes here. And, yes, I mean short. This doesn't need to be a novel. Think of it as your 30 second elevator pitch, but instead of being IRL — it's on the internet at the bottom of your website.
