Christian-ish | Week 7

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION

Opening Questions:

  1. In what ways have you struggled with the tension between your personal freedoms and your responsibility to others as a Christian?
  2. In what ways might our definition of ‘success’ as Christians differ from the world’s definition, and how should this impact our goals and priorities?

Key Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 8:9-13

Additional Scriptures:

Acts 20:22-24

Luke 12:4-7

Nahum 1:7

Matthew 6:9-13

2 Corinthians 12:9

Key Takeaways:

  1. DOES IT MAKE OTHERS STUMBLE: Your faith is not just personal – it’s meant to be on display and influence others. Our decisions should be filtered through how they impact others’ faith journeys.
  2. DOES IT MAKE OTHERS STRONGER: As Christians, we are called to be Christ’s ambassadors in the world. Something can be “not bad” but still be wrong if it causes others to stumble.
  3. DOES IT MAKE ME MORE SUCCESSFUL: Success for a Christian is measured by faithfulness to Jesus and fruitfulness in witness.

Discussion Questions:

  1. We said, “Your faith is not just personal – everything else about your life is to be put on display.” How does this challenge or affirm your current view of faith?
  2. Reflect on a time when someone’s Christian witness either strengthened or weakened your faith. What can we learn from these experiences?
  3. We mentioned several areas where Christians might become “stumbling blocks” (e.g., alcohol, entertainment, social media). Which of these areas do you find most challenging in your own life? Why?
  4. How does the idea of being “all things to all people” apply in our modern context? What might this look like practically?
  5. We defined success for a Christian as “faithfulness to Jesus and fruitfulness to your witness.” How does this definition differ from worldly measures of success? How might it change your priorities?
  6. Discuss the statement: “Just because something is not bad doesn’t mean that it’s not wrong.” Can you think of examples where this principle applies in your life?

Practical Applications:

  1. This week, intentionally consider how your actions and decisions might impact others’ faith journeys. Keep a journal of your observations.
  2. Identify one area of your life where you might be causing others to “stumble” unintentionally. Pray about and discuss with the group how you might address this.
  3. Practice sharing your faith story in 2-3 minutes. Take turns in the Group and provide constructive feedback to each other.
  4. Choose one person in your life who doesn’t know Jesus. Commit to praying for them daily and looking for opportunities to demonstrate Christ’s love to them.
  5. Evaluate your use of social media this week. How can you use these platforms to strengthen others in their faith rather than potentially cause stumbling?
  6. As a group, brainstorm ways you can collectively be “salt and light” in your community, workplace, or school. Choose one idea to implement together in the coming month.

A short bio goes here. And, yes, I mean short. This doesn't need to be a novel. Think of it as your 30 second elevator pitch, but instead of being IRL — it's on the internet at the bottom of your website.
