“The Rebel’s Surrender”

John 8…³² Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Truth doesn’t transform until it’s received. You can hear it, know it, see it; you can even kind of agree with it — but until you SURRENDER to it, it won’t change your life.

Matthew 16… ²⁵ For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

Luke 23… ³² Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. ³³ When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. ³⁴ Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. ³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” ³⁶ The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar ³⁷ and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” ³⁸ There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. ³⁹ One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” ⁴⁰ But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?⁴¹ We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” ⁴² Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” ⁴³ Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

How to SURRENDER…

(POINT ONE) LET DOWN MY PRIDE

Proverbs 16… ¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Matthew 27…³⁸ Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.³⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads⁴⁰ and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”⁴¹ In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.⁴² “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴ In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Psalms 51… ¹⁷ My sacrifice, O God, isa broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

(POINT TWO) LET GO OF THE LIES

1 Corinthians 1… ²⁶ Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. ²⁷ But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. ²⁸ God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, ²⁹ so that no one may boast before him.

Philippians 2…  ⁹ Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(POINT THREE) LET JESUS HAVE CONTROL

Lifting your hands isn’t weakness — it’s worship

It’s not giving up — it’s giving over
